About IPN

Instituto Pedro Nunes (IPN) is a non-profit private organization founded in 1991 and based in Coimbra. IPN promotes innovation and technology transfer, being the main link between the University of Coimbra and the business sector. IPN operates in three complementary areas: Incubation and acceleration of technology-based enterprises; Research and technological development; Highly specialized training. Recently, the IPN Incubator was distinguished by UBI Global as one of the 10 best university business incubators in the world.

The Laboratory for Informatics and Systems (IPN LIS) is one of the labs of research and technological development of IPN. It brings together a wide set of competencies and expertise in several areas of Information and Communication Technologies which are applied and used to support initiatives for technology transfer towards industry and public bodies.

Position Overview:

We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Senior Researcher specialized in Intelligent Systems and Software Engineering. The ideal candidate will possess substantial experience in academia or industry and demonstrate the ability to lead initiatives, manage projects, and apply interdisciplinary technologies to develop cutting-edge intelligent solutions.

Key Responsibilities:

• Research Leadership. Design, conduct, and oversee advanced research projects focused on intelligent systems, software engineering, and their applications.
• Technology Integration. Develop and implement innovative solutions utilizing artificial intelligence, machine learning, data analytics, and other relevant technologies to optimize communication processes and systems.
• Data Analysis. Utilize analytical tools and methodologies to interpret complex data sets and derive actionable insights.
• Publication & Presentation. Publish research findings in journals/conferences.
• Collaboration. Work closely with cross-functional teams, including data scientists, software developers, engineers, marketing professionals, and product developers, to integrate research insights into practical applications.
• Project Management. Lead multiple projects simultaneously, ensuring timely delivery, adherence to budgets, and achievement of project goals.
• Innovation. Stay updated with the latest trends in artificial intelligence, intelligent systems, and software engineering, driving innovative approaches, bringing innovative ideas to enhance our research and product offerings.
• Mentorship. Provide guidance and mentorship to junior researchers and team members, fostering their professional growth and development.

Qualifications:

• Education. At least a Master’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, or a closely related discipline.

Experience:

• Minimum of 3 years of relevant experience in academia or industry, focusing on on intelligent systems, software engineering, or related areas.
• Proven track record of managing and leading research projects successfully.
• Demonstrated experience in applying interdisciplinary technologies to solve complex communication and system challenges.

Skills:

• Technical Expertise. Proficiency in artificial intelligence and machine learning frameworks (e.g., TensorFlow, PyTorch), data analysis tools (e.g., Python, R), and relevant communication or system management software.
• Analytical Skills. Strong ability to analyze complex data and derive meaningful conclusions to inform strategic decisions.
• Communication. Excellent written and verbal communication skills for publishing research findings and presenting to diverse audiences in English.
• Project Management. Effective project management skills with the ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously and meet deadlines.
• Collaboration. Strong interpersonal skills to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team environment.
• Problem-Solving. Innovative and critical thinking abilities to address research and technical challenges.
